Being driven by one’s sugar cravings are a sign of imbalance in the body. In Part 1 we examined four factors that contribute to the development of your sugar cravings: that you might not be breaking down your carbohydrates into simple sugars through faulty digestion, that you may have developed an immune sensitivity to some types of carbohydrates and sugars, that you might have insulin resistance, or that the type of carbohydrate you are eating stimulates opoid receptors in the brain fueling your cravings to that specific carbohydrate. Next we will examine three more causes for sugar cravings.

Could Low Cortisol Create Sugar Cravings?

Those with chronic illness such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, eczema, seasonal allergies, candidiasis, adrenal fatigue, chronic low blood sugar issues, pre-diabetics and those will early stage insulin resistance, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, arthritis, migraines, PMS, and even the stressed, depressed and moody individuals will find themselves being driven by their cravings for sweets. Could any or all these conditions have low cortisol as a root cause? Absolutely!

Cortisol is a hormone made by our adrenal glands located above our kidneys. Without duplicating other articles in this blog on cortisol rhythm, low cortisol results in lower energy and stamina and difficulty in regulating one’s blood sugar on a metabolic level. During times of the day when your cortisol output may be low, your energy will be sluggish. You can feel like you are dragging yourself around and you may want to nap. Your blood sugar may also be low. Your instinctive reaction is to want to eat something to give you a quick pick up, such as coffee, coke, sugars, or a carbohydrate snack. The problem with this apparent solution is that it results in excessive insulin output a blood sugar rise followed by a blood sugar crash. Initially your energy will respond quickly, and then dip as your blood sugar crashes. This cycle weakens your adrenals and causes chronic low cortisol synthesis.

Your Diet May be Low in Protein

Proteins sustain our blood sugar over a longer period of time than a carbohydrate snack. Carbohydrates are digested quickly, being converted to simple sugars faster. This prompts a fast rise in blood sugar, and a fast crash in blood sugar. When protein is added, the rise in blood sugar is slower and sustained, as will your energy be over a longer period of time and without the resulting crash in blood sugar.

Patients suffering chronic fatigue, lyme disease, fibromyalgia, seasonal and environmental allergies, insulin resistance, adrenal fatigue, chronic viral infections, lyme disease, are particularly sensitive to low blood sugar and generally have recorded low cortisol readings somewhere in the day. As a result, frequent smaller meals, that include protein rather than carbohydrates will sustain their energy slumps in the day and sustain their blood sugar. Carbohydrates eaten alone, even when craved, will continue to weaken the adrenals and set up a vicious cycle of chronic low cortisol despite supplements to strengthen the adrenal glands. Even if one is given cortisone for adrenal exhaustion, eating a carbohydrate snack is detrimental to the recovery of the adrenals. Therefore, substitute a protein snack for your carbohydrate snake when your sugar cravings come roaring.

Are Pathogens Driving Your Sugar Cravings?

Low grade chronic infections are often present in chronic immune disorders such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, adrenal fatigue, eczema, seasonal allergies, environmental sensitivities, lyme disease, arthritis, ulcerative colitis, acid reflux, some migraines and chronic headaches, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. The most likely location is the colon where there may be an overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria such as cryptococcus, corynebacteria, bactroides, staph., strep., clostridia, pseudomonas etc.,with an accompanying low probiotic count. In addition, many patients will have an overgrowth of yeast, and fungal strains such as candida, geotrichum, aspergillas, mucor etc..

These pathogens thrive on simple undigested sugars circulating in our blood stream. In addition, candida, and other yeast and fungal strains will excrete certain mycotoxins that act upon the brain to simulate cravings for carbohydrates. This is a form of chemical warfare designed to help the pathogen thrive in your body!

Bacteria that exist outside the colon but in areas such as joint and connective tissue cause increased inflammation in those sites in response to your satisfying your sugar cravings. Many forms of arthralgia, arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and lyme disease will suffer aggravation of their symptoms in response to satisfying their sweet tooth!

Those suffering chronic fatigue and chronic viral infections such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever,  Coxsackie virus, Epstein Barr, Cytomegalovirus, Echo virus will suffer episodic dips in their energy level when the body is unable to continue to suppress the virus. Eating sweets and carbohydrates for quick energy pick ups weakens your adrenals and fuels the perpetual blood sugar crashes that fatigued adrenals cause. The undigested sugars circulating in your blood stream also are perfect fuel for any virus to multiply within your system.

Satisfying sugar cravings also makes your body acidic, the perfect environment to foster all pathogen growth within your body. Therefore, following the prompts of our body’s cravings is never a good idea, as it is a sign of an imbalance in sugar digestion and metabolism
