Two consistent issues that plague patients with chronic fatigue is blood sugar regulation and inefficient or sick mitochondria. Blood sugar regulation becomes an issue with those suffering from chronic fatigue because adrenal exhaustion weakens the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar. As a result the patient becomes more hypoglycemic over time and more intolerant to digesting carbohydrates. It turns into a vicious cycle whereby eating some carbohydrates makes you more tired and that in turn weakens your adrenals. It becomes a downward spiral. As the patient further reduces their consumption of carbohydrates their brain cries out for glucose and not receiving what it needs, more fatigue is created.

We have found a very promising supplement called benaGeneTM . This produce supplies the body with bio-identical human metabolite oxaloacetic acid (oxaloacetate in water) which helps to improve energy, improve sleep, reduce the ability to create and store fat, reduce cravings and reduce blood sugar.

Clinical trials using oxaloacetate have documented significant glucose level reductions in diabetic patients. A separate study in non-diabetic patients documented a reduction in the amplitude of glucose swings, allowing better overall blood sugar management. No negative side effects were reported. Although benaGeneTM lowers high glucose levels, it does not cause hypoglycemia (abnormally low glucose levels) in non-diabetic patients.  Studies are underway that hold promise in showing it as effective as the drug Metformin but without the side effects.

Immune Matrix had some of their athlete patients take benaGeneTM and it was reported that these patients had improved stamina and cardiovascular endurance. Also noted were better blood sugar levels throughout the afternoon when taken at noon, reduced appetite, improved satiety, clearer thinking.

The other factor common to chronic fatigue patients is sick mitochondria. What is meant by this term is that these unique cells stop producing ATP the energy molecule the body needs to run on and/or stop producing the precursors that lead to the production of ATP such as NAD/NADH. The only previous way of getting around this problem was to supplement the body with sublingual NADH.

However, benaGeneTM , has shown so much promise that a study is about to begin at UC San Diego & the FDA involving the effects of benaGeneTM and mitochondrial function. What is currently understood about oxaloacetate is that this bio-identical human metabolite also increases NAD+/NADH ratio. Within the last five years, there have been several studies by major universities documenting that an increase in the NAD+/NADH ratio results in statistically significant increases in lifespan and health-span in laboratory animals. Equally as exciting, this same increase in the NAD+/NADH ratio has also been shown to increase individual human cell lifespan in vitro.

If a patient is diabetic or is on diabetic medications, patients are advised to check their blood sugar levels between each meal and consult their prescribing physician before altering any prescription dosages in response to continued reduction in blood glucose levels. We at Immune Matrix think that benaGeneTM holds a lot of promise in helping patients improve their blood sugar regulation, strengthen their adrenal function as a result, reduce circulating sugars that would otherwise feed pathogens in the body, and help restore mitochondrial metabolism.

BenaGeneTM works through the energy sensor AMPK to mimic the calorie restricted state and activate genes that repair DNA and cellular structures.

I am a representative of Terra Biological– we are the scientific company behind benaGene. While we are pleased that the doctors at Immune Matrix LLC have taken a great interest in benaGene, we need to inject a note of caution here. benaGene is a nutritional supplement and does not diagnose, treat, prevent or cure any disease. While we have received anecdotal reports of various conditions that have improved with benaGene supplementation, we stress that we have not performed clinical trials on chronic fatigue syndrome patients nor mitochondrial disease patients. The clinical trial for diabetic patients was performed with sodium oxaloacetate which is very slightly different than the oxaloacetic acid which is provided in benaGene. So what is the science behind benaGene you may ask?
We have determined that oxaloacetate supplementation increases lifespan by mimicking some of the same molecular pathways as calorie restriction. The increase, as measured by short lived animals, is 25% (p < 0.001). (See our 2009 peer-reviewed articles in Aging Cell and in Open Longevity Journal). We have not measured the increase in lifespan in humans, as we would need 130 years to perform a full test. Note that calorie restriction has also not been proven to increase lifespan in any human subjects, however recent studies with monkeys over a 20 year period have shown increase in lifespan and health span with calorie restriction.
As a nutritional supplement, we present benaGene as a calorie restriction mimetic for anti-aging based on our work in animals. Any other use at this time is unproven.
