LINGERING COLDS AND FLU

One of the fundamental tenants of treatment at Immune Matrix clinics is to determine a patient’s relative degree of toxic retention, toxic stressors and detoxification pathway efficiency. Their proprietary testing and analysis reveals types of immune stressors and immune blocks to efficient metabolism. This winter their clinical director, Anna Manayan reveals that she has seen a correlation between a rise in environmental toxic retention and the onset of colds and flu, especially linger colds and flu.

What role does toxic retention play in contributing to one catching a cold or flu? Toxins of any type when retained to a certain threshold of retention make the body’s tissue more acidic. The body requires a lot of alkaline minerals, especially magnesium (deficient in our plant food supply due to the use of phosphate based fertilizers in organic and non-organic farming) to process and eliminate toxins. The liver will pull magnesium from muscle and intestinal tissues to maintain its detoxification efficiency. The resulting telltale symptoms that this is happening is persistent tight neck and shoulders, leg and toe cramping, worse at night, restless leg, hard stools and constipation. Yes, an ever increasing toxic world increases our need for magnesium!

When we do not take in sufficient alkaline minerals in sufficient quantity to serve the liver’s detoxification pathway needs, we begin to retain toxins and our tissues become more ‘acidic’. This makes for the perfect environment to foster the growth of virus, bacteria, yeast and candida. Add the American diet of more processed carbohydrates to alkaline vegetables and you have the perfect recipe to feed these pathogens! Therefore, your morning latte and scone could see you feeling badly by mid-morning with cold and flu symptoms now that those pathogens you picked up from the phone, the keyboard, the desk and tabletop/counter, the light switch, your cellphone, that office pen you haphazardly put in your mouth while thinking, the doorknob and other surfaces are being fed and housed in an acidic environment, you! We inoculate ourselves daily with pathogens we come into contact with. However, they need an opportunistic environment to thrive.

What kind of toxins add to the retention that can cause colds and flu to linger? Our other blog articles go into detail about detoxification pathway challenges and types of toxins but for purposes of this article we have seen a rise in environmental toxins this past winter that have added to the toxic retention and stress already a part of daily life. Where we are located in Northern Calfornia, San Francisco Bay Area, we have not had sufficient rain to clear the air of smog and other airborne pollutants. In fact, it’s one of the first years that our hillsides have remained brown the entire winter season. As part of Immune Matrix’s toxicity screening, many patients are now showing toxic retention to radiation, in particular, strontium, for the first time in its clinical history. A little research about strontium and strontium 90 in particular and you will find that the focal source of that pollution to our environment comes from the nuclear reactor site in Japan.

What Immune Matrix is beginning to see is strontium signatures as toxic stressors among those patients who live along the California coastline and those who eat more shellfish and seafood. Monitoring of strontium and other radiation signatures in our food is not regulated nor is it routinely done by our food suppliers and vendors with exception to Vital Choice Seafood (VitalChoice) who announced this month their monitoring the seafood for strontium 90 and plutonium levels. We congratulate them on taking the leading initiative to ensure safe seafood distribution.

With this winter’s increased environmental toxic load of smog, petrochemicals and debris from some huge fires and the added jet stream of radiation and pollution of seafood, and if you added to your heavy metal aluminum and sodium ethyl mercury exposure by getting a flu shot, maintaining a proper alkaline terrain for the tissues becomes even more challenging. Most do not know to increase their magnesium or alkaline mineral intake. Couple that to diets higher in carbohydrates (which deplete alkaline mineral stores) and you have the perfect recipe to welcome the growth of contagion.

What causes these colds and flu to linger? Maintaining acid terrain in the body continues the environment that allows these pathogens to flourish. Having a high toxic load perpetuates the acid terrain and lymphatic congestion that allows the perfect breeding ground for lingering pathogens. Another significant contributor to lingering colds and flu is diet. If one is also ingesting cow dairy products, especially for blood type Os, the likelihood of increased mucous production by the body accelerates one’s chances of having so much mucous that a secondary bacterial sinus or bronchial infection sets in. The congested mucous allows the bacteria to grow and flourish in a warm damp stagnant environment. As a result, adults and especially children will get ear infections and recurrent ones at that unless they refrain from cow dairy and take measures to alkalinize and detoxify their children.

Green drinks hidden in low glycemic fruit smoothies (with pea or rice protein), alkaline mineral supplementation and chlorella can make good first starts to tipping your balance from acidic, mucous ridden and toxic to alkaline and not-congested. Your diet, lifestyle (stress makes you acidic), and toxic exposure can tip you out of balance into the acid terrain. Do what you can by increasing your alkaline mineral/magnesium intake, reduce or eliminate cow dairy, support liver detoxification, make sure you are having daily bowel movements, drink your water (not soda, coffee which dehydrate the body) and you tip the odds in your favor of having a body that doesn’t welcome the growth of pathogens.

Many individuals need more help to detoxify with additional lymphatic drainage supplementation and methylation pathway nutritional support, especially in the presence of common liver methylation gene defects (aka snps). In addition, when opportunistic bacteria and mycoplasma infections are cyclical or chronic, the immune system often fatigues to their presence allowing for the perpetuation of an endless cycle of repetitive infections that do not respond to antibiotics. Take that as a clue that boosting immune recognition to those pathogens could mean all the difference in breaking the cycle of repetitive colds and infections, preventing ear stents in children, and breaking your cycle of chronic sinus infections, something that lies within the specialized forte of Immune Matrix clinics.
