This article is intended as a general introduction for parents to help them become aware of the effects of heavy metals on our children and will be followed up with additional in depth articles about navigating your way through safe and gradual heavy metal chelation and the challenges and effects that toxic exposures impose.
Most children born now compared to 50 years ago have a significant level of heavy metal accumulation. What has contributed to this significant increase in toxic exposure? Children now are being given more vaccines and more frequent vaccinations than those 50 years ago, meaning they are accumulating more mercury than their parents. Mothers are more toxic now than ever before. They store in their bodies the accumulation of heavy metal toxins from vaccinations they have received throughout their life, from canned tuna and other heavy metal toxic fish they have eaten throughout their life, from mercury amalgams (dental fillings) that continue to leach mercury into their systems, from the smog we breath and the air pollution from local and international trade winds. Even at elevations of 10,000 feet, the traces of toxic heavy metal burden is regularly found in the birds and trees living even at this elevation in North America. And, the food we eat, even organic in some cases is loaded with toxic heavy metals and other environmental toxins.
If a mother does not undergo any type of detoxification prior to having children, then her breast milk will concentrate significant toxins which are transferred to the baby. As a result the first born gets the bigger toxic load from the breast milk. It is a fact now that most breast milk is considered so toxic that it is unlawful to be thrown down a drain at any hospital or medical facility. This should alarm us and give us great cause for concern for our future generation.
Children with genetic challenges in their ability to detoxify, specifically methylate, are the ones at greatest risk to suffer neurological, learning and developmental disabilities. The degree to which these children have impairment in their ability to methylate directly relates to whether they will become challenged on the spectrum of developmental disabilities as severe as autism, ADD, ADHD, OCD, Asperger’s syndrome, or be mildly impaired with hyperactivity, or bouts of brain fog. Most children receive a diagnosis of autism, or Asperger’s by the time they are two years old. ADD, ADHD, OCD diagnoses are seen when the child is a bit older.
If your child has not been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, OCD, Asperger’s or Autism, should you still be concerned for the levels of heavy metals in your child? Yes. The reason is that the body deals with the exposure to heavy metals by storing what it cannot excrete in tissue: kidneys, hair, liver, digestive tract to name a few. Storing the heavy metal in tissue is the body’s way of protecting the brain from the damaging effects of metals. However, some metals do cross the blood-brain barrier and become deposited in the brain. The body has a very high tolerance for heavy metals, in the sense that it depends upon the duration of exposure, the size of exposure and the body’s ability to methylate the metals and excrete them through kidneys and colon in determining the damaging effects of heavy metal exposure. One mercury filling in a child will not send that child into developmental arrest, however, Immune Matrix has tragically seen too many cases of childhood vaccinations that with 24 hrs to 2 weeks result in irreversible developmental and neurological challenges for the child. Therefore, knowledge about your child’s ability to methyalte and caution is best advised.
Once deposited into tissue, heavy metals can affect the body in many ways. Some of the key patterns seen are as follows:
A) If deposited into the brain, and if the person is a young child, their brain neurons are still growing and very susceptible to damage from the heavy metal. In addition, the presence of the heavy metal also strips the coating from the neurons, creating neurological inflammation, whose severity depends upon whether the child goes into developmental arrest and stops talking, whether there are gradual changes and increasing challenges in speaking, focus, sensitivity to sound and light, and touch. As long as the metals remain, inflammation and neurological damage continues to interfere with growth and developmental processes.
B) If accumulated in the liver, the detoxification pathways that center around methylation can become affected resulting in accumulated extra cellular toxicity which then can begin to trigger immune cell recognition to the toxins, fueling inflammation and inhibiting detoxification of the offending metals. This is why some children get sick and become more symptomatic while they are being chelated! More will be discussed in future in depth articles about chelation on this key piece of information.
C) If accumulated in the digestive tract, the child can become challenged in his/her digestion. They can go off eating, become very picky, colicky, gasy and have bouts of diarrhea or constipation. It is known that heavy metals irritate the lining of the digestive tract and contribute to leaky gut through its inflammation promoting process. In addition, the presence of metals attracts the explosion of yeast and candida and certain pathogenic and dysbiotic bacteria resulting in increased inflammatory bowel processes. The toxins excreted by these pathogens have a further neurotoxic effect on the brains of younger children as parents report bouts of irritability, irrationality, aggressive behavior, inattention that subsides when the child’s sugar and carbohydrate consumption is severely restricted and when given activated charcoal at bed time, to absorb the mycotoxins. Sometimes the only hint of a heavy metal burden that a child might have are these digestive issues or acute reactions to high carbohydrate foods.
The presence of lead in the body makes mercury a thousand times more toxic than where mercury present alone, it has been reported. Many children even in this country have elevated lead levels in their blood and hair and trying to chelate them from mercury can be problematic and dangerous because of the synergistic effect of enhancing the potency of the mercury’s toxicity in the body. If a child tests high in lead then lead alone should be detoxified by the body.
Where are we getting our lead exposure? The presence of lead in old paints has been largely removed from current paint supplies, but old building still exist and the dust from the paint as its ages is a present exposure, especially old schools in this country. Our air is full of lead from smog and is one of the biggest sources of daily lead exposure. However, this is a gradual exposure and does not explain elevated lead levels in children. Toys from foreign countries is a real and present danger as the enamel and paints are not banned of lead in many other countries. On occasion their presence will be caught and recalled but the threat is bigger than most realize.
Many children also test high for aluminum. Parents are advised to check their Teflon cookware for scratches as aluminum is leached into food from these scratches, and replace their cookware immediately. More will be discussed in the future about aluminum.
To further reduce the risk of heavy metal and especially mercury exposure to your child do the following:
1- avoid feeding your child canned tuna
2- if you vaccinate your child, insist on thimerisol free vaccines and insist on having the doctor and/or nurse show you the ingredient list on the bottle prior to vaccination. Immune Matrix has come across cases where parents were told by medical staff that the vaccine was thimerisol free when in fact it was not. When thimerisol was taken out of some vaccines, doctor’s that had them in stock were legally allowed to continue to use them, but this never justifies deception. It could become a tragic mistake for your child as the damage from mercury in its many forms is cumulative. You cannot remove a vaccine once injected so make sure and be vigilant as what you do to your child is irreversible.
3- Be cautious on the types of toys you purchase with particular attention to what countries they are coming from and note any toys whose enamel or paint is beginning to flake off and remove them from your child.
4- Do not allow mercury amalgams to be placed in your child’s mouth. Use only porcelain fillings despite what some dentists claim is shorter filling life, it’s still absolutely harmless to have porcelain.
5- If you have mercury fillings in your child, get them removed only by an IAOMT dentist, one licensed with the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. There are specific safety guidelines in the removal of mercury not just in the mouth but from breathing the fumes that the dentist’s office needs to be specially equipped for. Do not be talked into removing mercury fillings from a regular dentist! For the name of the nearest IAOMT dentist see www.iaomt.org
6- Many hardware stores have test kits to determine if lead is contained in paint samples. If you are not sure, please have the paint tested.
7- Although mercury and other heavy metals are distributed throughout the body, one can obtain a rough approximation to determine if there are elevated levels of aluminum and mercury in particular with a hair test. The hair is a reflection generally speaking of the exposure and accumulation in the last 3 months.
Immune Matrix prefers to use the Doctor’s Data Hair Elements kit available at their online store at https://www.immunematrix.com, under lab kits. You can do the test at home, send it in and in two weeks you will receive a report and consult regarding the findings. This is a recommended place to begin to also determine the relative degree of de-mineralization and heavy metal stress your child may be under. If the test comes back high then further testing is warranted.
8- Add a medical grade fish oil to your child’s diet. The EPA/DHA is essential for
reducing inflammation and assisting in cell membrane repair and re-myelination of nerve tissue in the body and the brain. Immune Matrix has been testing the therapeuatic effects of different medical grade fish oils and has found that Metagenics’s EPA-DHA 6:1 outperforms on BIA test results in regenerating cell membrane function and is ultrapure. It is available on their online store under “inflammation” products at www.immunematrix.com. Children with any type of digestive inflammation or suspected heavy metal toxicity are suggested to take one pill twice a day with food and preferably with a digestive enzyme to help them break down and absorb the fatty acids, fight inflammation and accelerate cellular and neuronal repair.
Taking these action steps will go far to help you investigate and protect the health of your children and begin to resolve and improve and in many cases heal from a diagnosis of autism, ADD, OCD, ADHD and such. More in depth articles will examine particular clinical aspects of these conditions and how you as parents can facilitate your child’s healing and prevent additional toxic insults.

What Do Food Cravings Mean?
Cravings are a sign of a chemical imbalance in the body. Food cravings present themselves much like many addictions:
1) you find yourself obsessing about a particular food, anticipating eating it
2) its presence in your house is a distraction that you cannot avoid
3) you eat more than you should of the food without stopping, binge on that food and are unable to stop until over full, or have to have a particular food frequently and are unable to go without that food for at least a week without discomfort
4) find yourself eating the food in secret
5) children become very demanding about “needing” to eat a particular food, throw tantrums if they cannot have a particular food and refuse to eat anything else in its place, and/or overeat the particular food
Most of the time for those foods we have intense cravings, we develop an immune sensitivity to and a linked associated positive neurological chemical response that creates sensations of calmness (GABA), pleasure (serotonin) or stimulation (acetylcholine) to the brain. As a result, the more you eat that food, the more you want it because the brain has established a chemical link between the food that promotes the needed chemical benefit to the brain and the brain’s need to maintain the desired state of calmness, pleasure or stimulation. It is as if the brain is calling in the specific food craving to maintain a certain desired neurological state. This also begins the cycle of addictions.
What are the worst food cravings?
The most intense and popular food cravings are those related to sugars, from fructose, lactose, sucrose, maltose, to artificial sugars. Having a sugar sensitivity can cause you to develop grass and weed allergies, making seasonal airborne allergies worse. In women, sugar sensitivities often make estrogen and progesterone balance more difficult resulting in worsening symptoms of PMS, and hot flashes, and is believed to play a part in polycystic ovaries. Having sugar sensitivities makes it nearly impossible to loose weight because the very food you are unable to metabolize well will put on weight most easily through the complex interplay of hormones and toxic storage in fat cells. Sugar sensitivities also play a huge part in making children hyperactive to the point of their being labeled as having ADD, attention deficit syndrome, with the worst offenders coming from children’s cereal. All these conditions are reversible.
COMMON FOOD CRAVINGS

Anything salty
Anything spicy
Certain types of drinks:
Cokes
Beer
Wine
Cravings for specific types of foods:
Chocolate
Bread, cookies, cakes
Coffee
Certain types of nuts
Certain types of fruits
Salty chips
What Factors Contribute to the Development of Food Cravings and Addictions?
Certain chemical imbalances in the brain throw off levels of key brain chemicals called neurotransmitters: GABA, serotonin, acetylcholine, DOPA, and can pre-dispose individuals to develop cravings, addictions, and dependency issues. Eating the food promotes the desired brain effect, be it a sense of calmness to counter anxiety, a sense of happiness to counter low moods, or energy boosts to counter slow brain speed and energy. Examples of foods that induce a sense of calm are comfort foods, high carb and dairy foods, and alcohol. High sugar foods for quick pick up that contain food colorings, MSG to enhance flavor, or other chemical food additives, establish that needed link to the brain.
Some food cravings and addictions to drug and alcohol are a result of the opiod like effects found in those substances. Examples of these food substances are foods containing gluten, gliadin, mycotoxins, MSG, and many chemical food additives. Part of the motivation in the food industry to promote these substances is the addictive drive they induce by causing people to crave more of the chemically laced food. Great marketing tactic, but otherwise does more harm than good for one’s health. A classic example was the tobacco industry using certain strains of molds/fungi whose mycotoxins created addictive cravings.
Certain nutritional deficiencies also promote intense food cravings. A classic example is magnesium deficiency creating an intense craving for chocolate, especially dark chocolate. However, one cannot determine by the nature of one’s food cravings whether you are deficient, having an immune reaction to, or reacting to the opiod or other chemical stimulant effect of the food. For example, in most cases that Immune Matrix has seen, where patients crave salty food, and over salt their food, the patient had developed an immune sensitivity to sodium chloride and not necessary to mineral salts! It did not mean this patient needed more salt in their diet or was low in sodium.
Sometimes outside influences drive our cravings! What does that mean? Sometimes with an overgrowth of yeast and candida in the digestive track or in other parts of the body, these organisms create a mycotoxin that sends signals to the brain to promote intense desire and cravings for carbohydrates and sweets and/or alcohol. Other pathogens can do this in the bacteria and viral line but the yeasts and candida are the most notorious. As a result, our bodies respond to the signals these pathogens send to our brain in an effort for them to be fed! That is why one must determine if they are also suffering from overgrowth of pathogenic yeast, bacteria and candida in both the digestive tract and body; testing is different for both. Other outside influences that can drive our cravings are MSG, gluten, and even certain negative emotional states that alter our brain chemistry.
Complex immune interactions with multiple substances called “combination immune sensitivities” can play a power driving force for cravings. Combination immune sensitivities are immune reacts created in the presence of something else. For example, Immune Matrix has found that a common combination immune sensitivity that creates food cravings is sugar, serotonin and estrogen, or sugar and nicotine. When the immune systems recognizes this combination, carbohydrate cravings, estrogen imbalances such as PMS and hot flashes get worse. They have also found immune links to candida, sugar and heavy metals.
Link to Nicotine:
Immune Matrix has also confirmed a link between cravings for sugar, nicotine and carbohydrate immune sensitivities and problems with sugar metabolism. Often an ex-smoker can have a transferance of nicotine cravings to sugar cravings years later, even when the person quit smoking over 10 years ago! Despite the fact the person quit smoking, the sugar cravings will persist until the nicotine sensitivity is treated!
They may no longer crave smoking, but will have intense cravings for sweets and carbohydrates.
Generally speaking within two hours of eating a particular food one can see detrimental effects of hyperactivity, or sleepiness. In addition, the very act of eating a food can cause immediate cravings for more. This is the opiod effect of the food. You are now beginning to see that food cravings and addictions are complicated, multi-faceted issues involving your brain chemistry, your digestive process, your sugar metabolism, your hormonal system and your body’s relationship to silent pathogenic influences. Therefore, to simply label someone with ADD, or ADHD speaks nothing of the complicated mechanisms that drive the end result of lack of attention, hyperactivity, mood swings, brain fog, emotional swings and such. For this reason, no drug will cure ADD, ADHD, only control it. You need to address all the contributing factors that allow this biochemical imbalance to exist in the body and make sure your lifestyle is not promoting it!
Improved Sugar Digestion:
Intense cravings for sweets, breads, pasta, cookies is an indication that we have sensitivities to various forms of sugar. Immune Matrix patients undergo a comprehensive computerized screening to isolate the type of sugar sensitivity present and degree of sugar metabolism pathway problems a patient is suffering as a result of immune interception. These immune sensitivities contribute significantly to other metabolic imbalances, such as the use of glucagon and insulin, the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, and hormones such as estrogen, all playing a part in carbohydrate digestion. You can improve and totally change your sugar metabolism and resolve all food cravings.
In summary, compelling food attractions and addictions involve a complicated interplay between our brain chemistry and our digestive and immune health. The first path to health is to become aware of how your body drives your food preferences and whether you are being driven by those desires to seek out that specific food, and whether you can easily go without those foods without obsessive desires or symptoms of withdrawal. The next step is to determine the cause for those food cravings. Understanding this goes far to help you understand your reaction to food. It also helps parents in raising their children to find an association between the food you feed your child and its effect upon their ability to focus and stay calm enough to interact productively with you and their classmates.
The Treatment
Successful non-drug treatment for food cravings exists. However, as mentioned above, one must work with an experienced practitioner capable of making assessments as to all the possible causative factors:
1- dysbiosis
2- leaky gut
3- methylation, detoxification inefficiencies
4- state and nature of inflammatory alarm
5- hormone levels and their interplay
6- determining sugar sensitivities
7- determining sensitivities to food additivies
8- determining toxic exposure
9- assessing degree of heavy metal burden
10- neurotransmitter imbalances
11- eliminating the opiod effects of gluten, food additives, nicotine, prescription and recreational drugs, and alcohol
12) effect of imbalanced cortisol on blood sugar regulation and immune system alarm
It is the philosophy and commitment of Immune Matrix to offer these above suggestions to you to empower you to begin finding answers. Immune Matrix patients are given this thorough and systematic evaluation and assistance to help them peel off the layers of obstruction and immune interference leading to chronic inflammation and degeneration of the body and to improve their metabolic pathways so as to allow more efficient healing and regeneration, essential to optimizing one’s health.
Every patient is unique and therefore the detective process used to discover the underlying causes for food cravings should take into account everything addressed here. Masking symptoms with stimulants such as coffee, or giving in to the food cravings, or thinking things are under control as long as a prescription drug is taken does not cure the condition or even reduce the progression of the metabolic and immune disorder to spreading to other metabolic systems involving your hormones, your neurotransmitters, sleep, insomnia, mood, insulin resistance, syndrome X, susceptibility to estrogen type cancers, arteriosclerosis, osteoporosis and many other chronic inflammatory conditions made worse by metabolic and immune imbalances. Begin today a systematic approach to identifying all factors contributing to less than optimum health.

Food sensitivities and allergies can have a significant impact on our children’s ability to sit still and focus and to maintain healthy moods and sleep cycles, and affect adults in similar ways causing brain fog, chronic fatigue, insomnia, headache, and migraines to name a few.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FOOD ALLERGY AND A FOOD SENSITIVITY?
Food allergies are diagnosed via the ELISA blood test which looks for positive IgE titers at sufficient levels to specific phenolics in food. For example, testing positive with IgE to oranges means you are testing positive for those chemicals that make an orange an orange as opposed to its other ingredients such as: vitamin C, bioflavinoids, and acid. A food sensitivity is not diagnosed with IgE blood work and one can have an immune reaction to acidic foods or vitamin C and therefore become reactive to eating an orange even when the blood test did not reveal an “orange” allergy! Therefore, just because a food item does not show up on an ELISA blood test does not mean there is no immune reactivity contributing to symptoms!
It has been the observation at Immune Matrix that those suffering chronic inflammation or those with histories of allergies and asthma in the family, ADD, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders tend to have more food sensitivities than allergies. However, in either case the symptoms can be just as severe. In the case of food sensitivities, however, its effect can and often bypasses the commonly associated allergic reaction of hives, rashes, bloating, gas, diarrhea, headache, migraine, sinus congestion to impacting other metabolic processes in the body, such as acting as a neurotoxin and affecting neurotransmitter balance, contributing to brain fog an hour or two after eating the food, insomnia, hyperactivity, aggressive behavior, temper tantrums, irritability or chronic and/or cyclic fatigue, and depression. Symptoms are more noticeable in children because their brains are in development and are more sensitive. Adults may notice brain fog or fatigue after a meal, irritability or mood swings up or down within hours of consuming an offending food and suffer insomnia, bloating and weight gain, headaches and/or migraines and chronic stuffy heads and noses.
ARE SOME FOODS WORSE THAN OTHERS IN AFFECTING FOCUS?
Yes. Certain foods contain substances that act as neuro-toxins to the brain. “Moldy” foods such as raisins, strawberries, cantaloupe, grapes, honeydew, peanuts, oats can have a neurological effect upon the brains of those sensitive to mycotoxins from the molds found in these food substances.
Individuals with candida and yeast overgrowth in their intestinal tract manufacture mycotoxins in their systems. When sugary snacks, crackers, cookies, breads, pizza, fruit juices, sodas, high glycemic fruits such as banana, are eaten by these individuals, the digestive sugars that result feed these pathogens and result in waves of mycotoxins released into the blood stream to begin a cascade of inflammation that irritates neurons in the brain and the lining and function of the digestive tract. Within hours of ingestion, a person may experience sudden fatigue, brain fog, irritability or hyperactivity to name a few symptoms.
Other types of food contain specific proteins known to excite the immune system into reacting to different tissue types in the body. Gluten and gliadin from flour is a classic example. The digestion of gluten containing products contains at least these known proteins: gliadin, friabilin, alpha-glutenin, lipopurothionins, triticin D globulin, wheat lectins, glutelin, triticin A globulin, mannoglucan, leucosin, subtilisin. Besides inducing immune inflammation, these proteins can act as opoids in the brain creating cravings, hyperactivity, headaches, migraine and other inflammatory conditions affecting focus, sleep and mood.
If a parent has a child that is struggling to settle down, and focus in class, or if as an adult you feel exhausted, sleepy, having trouble concentrating within two hours after a meal, then take the following action steps for at least 3 weeks to allow the body to excrete these mycotoxins and offending proteins and begin to see gradual reductions in one’s symptoms. This would be an indication that you or your child is suffering from some type of food sensitivity.
1) Eliminate sugars between meals. Ingested between meals as a snack, these foods turn into simple sugars quickly in the blood stream and are easily taken up to foster and grow pathogenic yeast and candida in the digestive tract. These sugars include: banana, mango, grapes, strawberries, granola snacks, all crackers, cookies, candies, cereals, sodas, fruit juices, and pure carbohydrate snacks such as potato chips, popcorn and corn chips.
Replace these snacks with a boiled egg, chicken breast, slice of turkey, or smoothies made with almond milk or rice milk with rice protein added and some frozen blueberries. It is important to eat some protein in a snack to slow the conversion of sugars in the digestive tract to control blood sugar and to reduce the overgrowth of bad gut flora.
2) Eliminate foods containing preservatives and food colorings. These foods also
can irritate and affect neurological function such as to cause headaches, migraines, hyperactivity and such. Therefore, if it comes in a box, try not to eat it. Stay as close to nature as possible in your food preparations and use sea salt for seasoning in moderation and liquid amino acids instead of soy sauce for flavor.
3) Eliminate all gluten from the diet. This includes oats, oatmeal, granola bars.
Replace with rice, potato, quinoa, millet. Eat almonds and cashews instead of peanuts for snacks.
Take a look at you or your child’s current diet for one day. Write down everything that is consumed. Then look over each item one by one and see if it falls into the categories discussed here. Then come up with a systematic plan to begin to replace each offending food item with a healthier item.
Changing your children’s eating habits and that of one’s family is not easy. It is not recommended that you eliminate everything because the change is too drastic. Many parents complain that their children will refuse to eat anything. Begin by reducing the offending food. If soda is consumed with each meal in the home, for the first week, only allow soda once a day. The second week reduce that if possible to one day a week as a treat and so on. Have a healthy replacement on hand such as sparking mineral water. Therefore, for each offending food substance suspected, have a planned substitute and a planned sequence of reduction of consumption. Write it down and stick to it and wait and watch to see that symptoms often do subside.
4) Find out if you or your child has dysbiotic intestinal flora with a Microbiology
Stool test from Doctor’s Data, available at the online store at www.ImmuneMatrix.com. This test will help to identify the types and numbers of bacteria, yeast, and fungi living in the digestive tract contributing to the synthesis of toxins that alter and detrimentally affect the nervous system. If so, all the more reason to watch the diet closely and work toward eliminating the pathogens and improving the bowels with good intestinal flora.
5) Get an ELISA test for food allergies.
6) Find an alternative medical practitioner experienced in treating and de-sensitizing food sensitivities.
7) Order a NeuroScreen/NeuroScience urine test online store at www.ImmuneMatrix.com to get a baseline view of key neurotransmitter ratios helpful for correlating the degree of neurological imbalance food allergies and sensitivities and other inflammatory conditions can cause.
The above suggested guidelines can help you take the first steps toward discovering how changes in lifestyle can empower you to improve the health of your child and your family and is essential for a successful long term holistic resolution of symptoms that if left unchecked can cause long term dependency on prescription medication for control.
